Succession’s ‘ludicrously capacious’ bag sells for £14,700 at auction

The listing for the item stipulated that ‘flat shoes for the subway and lunch-pail’ were ‘not included’

The “ludicrously capacious” bag toted by one of Greg’s girlfriends in Succession has fetched $18,750 (£14,700) at auction.

It was sold alongside a black and white Sandro dress, also worn by the same character in the famous scene. The listing for the item stipulates that “flat shoes for the subway and lunch-pail [are] not included”.

The checked Burberry bag went viral last year after it was mocked by Matthew Macfadyen’s character Tom Wambsgans on the HBO show, and sparked multiple conversations about ‘stealth wealth’.

The bag was one of more than 200 props and costumes from the HBO show that were auctioned in the US on Saturday by Heritage Auctions. Other items which were up for auction included the symbolically loaded scorpion paperweight which Wambsgans gifts to his wife Shiv Roy, which sold for $10,000. Kendall Roy’s Waystar Royco ID card sold for $6,250. Wambsgans pipped him to the post (again), with his own ID card selling for $6,875. The fake sausages used during the ‘Boar on the Floor’ hazing game fetched $5,250, while the $13 Walmart shirt worn by Roman Roy during his recovery from the election riot sold with a pair of pink shorts for $1,850. Kendall Roy’s credit cards and driver’s licence, Logan Roy’s birthday card to Kendall, and the Doderick costume worn by Greg in the show’s first episode were also sold.

The most expensive item sold at the auction were the cue cards Roman Roy prepared for his father’s eulogy. The buyer paid $25,000 for the four cards, of which three contained handwritten notes and one of which was blank. Many fans and critics have argued that the funeral scene, where the cue cards are used, is Culkin’s best performance to date.

More than 10,000 bids were placed in total. Jax Strobel, Heritage Screenbid’s managing director, described the response from the public as “extraordinary” and noted that “many fans have focused on the hidden details revealed in the documents created by a prop department.”

The auction sales totalled $627,825, which will be shared between HBO and Heritage Auctions.
